The gym was full, and energy was high as the Lower School Spirit squad made its entrance into the gym. After a brief program and a national anthem by the Upper School’s Orchestra club and choir, the ball was tipped for the game in which the Great Hearts Invictus Middle School Girls’ Basketball team would capture the Classical and Traditional Athletic League (CTAL) championship.
“The Lady Highlanders’ consistency in training, commitment to one another, and dedication to the Invictus Athletics core values of resiliency, grit, determination, and accountability speaks to the culture of excellence these ladies leave behind,” shared Leland Hammonds, Athletic Director. “Championships are simply the ‘result,’ but the true success on the Invictus campus is the partnership of trust between our families, athletes, and coaches.”
That partnership has produced something special. Over the last three seasons, the Lady Highlanders have built a remarkable program record while competing against a wide range of opponents, including UIL public schools, private schools, and even high school varsity teams. The result: a three-year record of 50–5, reflecting both competitive excellence and consistent preparation.
This season’s title also marks a historic milestone for the program. The Lady Highlanders are the inaugural back-to-back regular season and postseason champions of the CTAL, a testament to steady leadership, a strong team culture, and scholars who are willing to do the hard work together.
At Great Hearts Texas, athletics are not “extra,” they are a meaningful extension of the mission to cultivate virtue and form the whole student. The Lady Highlanders’ championship is a proud accomplishment, but it also offers prospective families a clear window into our schools’ culture: students striving together, families supporting one another, and coaches shaping young people through habits that last well beyond a season.
Every player on the roster is a multi-sport athlete who is also pushed to excel in the classroom, balancing rigorous academics with commitments that require focus, time management, and perseverance. That combination—strong academics, strong character formation, and strong community, is what many families are looking for when they explore Great Hearts.
Nights like this championship remind us why school communities matter. They are places where students learn to compete with honor, celebrate with gratitude, and grow through challenge.
